Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic

This is a clinic that takes place in the hospital prior to your admission to the hospital to ensure that you are fit for surgery and understand the nature of the operation.  Pre-operative assessment clinics vary from hospital to hospital but are usually carried out by a combination of personnel, including nurses and physiotherapists.  You will be screened to make sure you are medially fit for surgery, blood and urine tests will be carried out to ensure no abnormalities or infection exists, and you will be screened for MRSA.

Further X-rays will be taken if necessary.

You will be given information about your condition and about the operation.  Many clinics will give you the opportunity to see and hold the prostheses that are used in joint replacement.  The operation is explained to you and the post-operative procedures covered.  You will have an opportunity to discuss the equipment you will need to assist with recovery, which may include raised toilet seat, a stocking applicator and walking aids.  You will also be given information about the ideal height for chairs and beds.
